The SF510 features an island-style keyboard

Keyboard VGP-BPS13 and Touchpad

The SF510 features an island-style keyboard that's spacious and flex-free. Although Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad T410 Battery the key feel wasn't the best we've experienced, we were able to get to our normal typing speed right away. The only real VGP-BPS9/S trade-off for having a full keypad on the right side of the layout is a slightly shrunken right Shift key.

Open this laptop up VGP-BPS13A/B and you'll see that the raised edges of the wave create a shallow well for the keyboard on the VGP-BPS9/B chocolate-covered deck. We like that the deck is minimal--just a few silver buttons above the keyboard for controlling volume and Wi-Fi on the left VGP-BPS9A/B and the power button on the right.

The generous 3.8 x 2.4-inch clickpad on the SF510 VGP-BPS9 took some getting used to. It's not as finicky or difficult to use as HP's clickpads from last year, but it's not as effortless to use as those found on Apple's MacBooks. The left and right mouse button require a fair amount of precision, and you'll have VGP-BPS8 to be more mindful of your finger placement to avoid clicks that don't register.

Display, Audio, Multimedia

The glossy 15.6-inch, LED-backlit display's 1366 x 768 resolution is expected in this VGP-BPS8A price range. Overall, colors were bright, blacks deep, and pixels smooth in HD content, making for an enjoyable experience when watching videos or VGP-BPS2 working in Word. We just wish we didn't have to tilt the lid back to keep the image from washing out.

Despite these drawbacks, multitouch gestures were easy to execute, and cursor control was nice and VGP-BPS2A smooth.

Thanks to SRS Premium Sound, the SF510 produces excellent audio. The speakers VGP-BPS2B at the top of the deck pumped volume enough to fill a large living room at just 50 percent. We appreciated the decent bass when listening to "Telephone" VGP-BPS2C by Lady Gaga, and the SF510 even captured the cello's resonance in tracks from Zoe Keating's "Into the Trees."

Along with the Touch and the Daily Edition, Sony has updated its smallest eReader, the Pocket Edition, with touch VGP-BPS13A/Q capabilities and an improved E Ink screen. At $179, this 5-inch device is also the least expensive eReader in Sony's stable, and it's priced to compete with the VGP-BPS13/B Amazon Kindle 3G and the Barnes & Noble Nook. But is its touchscreen enough to make up for its lack of wireless VGP-BPS13B/B connectivity?

Streaming media is in this notebook's DNA, as the SF510 includes a couple of easy ways to play or send content to other VGP-BPS13B/Q devices. The DNLA-backed Easy Content Share utility makes it simple to set up file sharing and media streaming between devices--including VGP-BPS13A/S Galaxy S phones. Intel's Wireless Display is also built in, which allows users to stream content from the notebook to an HDTV. However, you'll VGP-BPS13/Q need to buy Netgear's Push2TV adapter ($79) to enjoy this feature

Design

Sony completely redesigned the Pocket Edition to match the look of the Touch and Daily Edition. Gone is the D-pad, VGP-BPS21A/B as well as the buttons along the right side of the 5-inch display. Now there are just five slim buttons beneath the display--Page back, Page forward, Home,VGP-BPS21/S Zoom, and Options--and the Pocket now has a touchscreen just like its larger siblings.

Though light, the Pocket feels solid due to its silver metal case,VGP-BPS21 while chrome-colored buttons on the front add a touch of elegance. The included stylus fits snugly in a port along the right edge. Sony wisely replaced the miniUSB jack on the bottom with a (more standard) microUSB jack. There's also no longer VGP-BPS21A a separate power port for the A/C adapter; the Pocket comes with an adapter for the USB cord.

Ivory and brown? Yes, and it works. The $629 Samsung SF510--a Best Buy exclusive--is a VGP-BPS21B budget-friendly laptop with plenty of flair. Armed with an Intel Core i3 CPU, this 15-inch notebook is an excellent choice for consumers looking for good battery something powerful enough for everyday computing in a curvy design that is anything but ho-hum.

Design

Not many ivory notebooks come through our labs, but the SF510 wears the color well. Although hp notebook akku the lid is glossy, it looks pretty elegant and it doesn't pick up fingerprints. The sides and bottom are also ivory, but they have a matte sony notebook akku finish. Wavy chrome accents line the right and left edges of the SF510, lending a bit of an edge to the machine when closed.

The 13.7 x 9.7 x 1.1-inch chassis is svelte for a 15-inch notebook. At 5.4 pounds, the SF510 is a little too heavy to asus notebook akku carry around often, but it's easy to shuttle from room to room.

Unlike the Touch and Daily Editions, the Pocket has no memory card slots or headphone jack lining fujitsu notebook akku the top and bottom edges. Users will have to settle for the 2GB of internal memory, which can hold thousands of eBooks.

At 5.7 x 4.1 x 0.33 inches, the Pocket Edition is one toshiba notebook akku of the smallest eReaders on the market. Weighing just 5.5 ounces, it's more than three ounces lighter than the Kindle 3G (8.7 ounces). One could fit it snugly into a rear pants pocket, though we wouldn't advise putting it there. A better place dell notebook akku would be an inside jacket or coat pocket, or the side pocket of a purse or bag.

The on-screen keyboard lags a little when typing, but not as much as the previous generation. acer battery We managed to type quite fast with the stylus and our fingers

While PC makers initially targeted laptops with 3D apple battery displays and glasses at gamers, Acer is hoping to widen their appeal to all sorts of entertainment seekers. Priced at $999, the Aspire 5745DG is the least expensive 3D notebook we've tested that uses Nvidia's impressive 3D Vision technology. Powered by ibm battery a Core i5 processor, this 15.6-inch system can also output 3D content to a compatible TV via its HDMI connection. So is this multimedia machine hp battery really a bargain?

Display

The Sony Readers utilize high-contrast E Ink sony battery Pearl displays, the same technology used in the second-gen Kindle DX and the Kindle 3G. To facilitate touch functionality, there are IR sensors around the edge of the screen that detect and track movement, be it a user's finger or the stylus. As a result, the asus battery Pocket Edition's display is bright and crisp. In a side-by-side comparison with the Kindle 3G, text on the Pocket Edition looked crisper, though the Kindle has slightly fujitsu battery deeper contrast. The bigger drawback is the Pocket's lack of font choice. While the Kindle has three available fonts, the Sony eReader toshiba battery has just one.

Overall, the Pocket Edition's touchscreen worked well. The only time we encountered an issue was when working with handwritten dell battery notes either in the Memo app or within books. There was minute but discernible lag as we scribbled with the included stylus, with the thin mark appearing acer laptop battery milliseconds behind the tip. When we made slower, more deliberate marks, the Pocket was able to keep up.

ASUS Eee PC 1018P

An aluminum design makes this one of the sexiest and sturdiest Thinkpad T60 Battery netbooks yet, but the ergonomics could be much better.

The pace of netbook innovation Vostro 1500 Battery has slowed to a virtual crawl in recent months as most vendors have settled on the same old 10.1-inch screen, Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of RAM, modest 5,400 rpm hard drive, and Windows 7 Starter OS. The main way to stand out in this market is through superior design and usability. The $379 Best Buy exclusive version of the ASUS Eee PC 1018P accomplishes the former with great aplomb, offering a sexy brushed aluminum lid and deck for an affordable price. However, its Vostro 1400 Battery cramped keyboard and stiff touchpad buttons make it a little unpleasant to use.

Design

The 2.4-pound, 10.3 x 7.1 x 0.9-inch Eee PC 1018P is definitely one of the thinner and lighter Latitude E4300 Battery netbooks on the market. It's nearly half a pound lighter and significantly thinner than 2.8-pound competitors like the Acer Aspire One 532h (1-inch thick), the Samsung N150 Plus (1.4-inches thick), and the Toshiba NB305 (1.4-inches thick). The classy, raven black chassis has an attractive brushed aluminum lid and deck, with a matching brushed plastic black bezel. The ASUS logo on the lid and the power, Wi-Fi on/off, and performance mode buttons add an attractive touch of silver. The entire system Latitude E6500 Battery is also available in white.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard and touchpad are where the ASUS Eee PC 1018P really falls short. Even by 10-inch netbook standards, its keyboard feels Latitude E5500 Battery cramped and uncomfortable. Not only is the right shift key undersized, but the rest of the keys are tiny and narrowly spaced. On the ten thumbs typing test, where we average 80 words-per-minute with a 1-percent error rate, we managed only 69 words Sony VGP-BPS9/B Battery per minute with a whopping 4-percent error rate, because we kept missing keys.

The 3 x 1.5-inch touchpad is certainly large enough, but when using it, the cursor occasionally Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Batteryjumped around the screen. At several points, the accuracy of the pad was so poor that it actually dragged scroll bars or windows down when we were moving our finger up. Worse, the single mouse button is one of the stiffest we've used, requiring us to use too much force. After clicking a few times, our index finger Acer Laptop Battery became sore. If you do buy this netbook, you'll wind up double tapping the touchpad a lot.

Heat

The Eee PC 1018P stayed pleasantly cool throughout our testing. After streaming a video at full screen for 15 minutes, we measured the touchpad at a chilly 79 degrees, the keyboard at a mere 85 degrees, and the bottom at 98 degrees Fahrenheit. We consider temperatures below 95 degrees good battery acceptable for any area on the top of the notebook and temperatures 100 degrees and below common for the bottom surface.

Toshiba mini NB205

At first glance, it would seem that there’s very little a manufacturer can do these days to make Dell Latitude E4300 Battery its 10-inch netbook stand out from the hordes of others on the market. Yet, despite being more than a year late to the game in North America, Toshiba’s mini NB205 does just that. It has created a netbook that, while housing a standard Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, and Microsoft Windows XP Dell Latitude E6500 Battery Home, manages to break the mold. With a beautiful chassis, a spacious keyboard and touchpad, an exemplary more-than 9 hours of battery life, and a competitive $399 price tag, Toshiba’s netbook rises above the competition.

Unique Design

With most HP/Compaq Laptop Battery netbooks sporting the same organs, Toshiba joins the ranks of ASUS and other manufacturers in realizing that aesthetics must be top of mind when Dell Latitude E5500 Battery designing a netbook. The Sable Brown lid (also available in Royal Blue, Posh Pink, and Frost White) is adorned with raised horizontal lines. Combined with an elegant, shiny bronze hinge (with a glowing power button at the center), it nicely matches the silver finish on the bottom deck for an overall professional look. Toshiba will also offer a $349 version (NB205-N210) of this netbook that will come in Black Onyx only, which will have Toshiba’s smooth Fusion Finish (rather than the raised pattern) on the VGP-BPS9/B Battery lid.

At 10.4 x 7.6 x 1.3 inches, the NB205 is quite compact, although not as slim as the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA (10.3 x 7 x 1.0) or the Acer Aspire One AOD250 (10.2 x 7.2 x 1.0). Additionally, this netbook’s standard VGP-BPS9A/B Battery six-cell battery juts out from the back of the system. Weighing 2.8 pounds by itself, together the NB205 and its AC adapter came in at 3.4 pounds, and didn’t put much strain on our shoulder as we walked home.

Great Keyboard, Touchpad Combo

The area underneath the attractive lid of the NB205 continues to impress. The metal island keyboard on our model (the less expensive version will be plastic and Latitude E6400 Battery non-island style) is one of the best we’ve seen, and rivals that of the HP Mini 2140. Though they’re sturdy and comfortable, it can take a bit of time to get used to its keys. Nevertheless, we achieved a strong score of 80 words per minute with a one-percent error rate on the Ten Thumbs typing test (www.tenthumbstypingtutor.com). We had a two-percent error rate on the Samsung N120.We also noticed that the gray icons for shortcuts on the function keys were hard to see in the light against its silver VGP-BPS13/B Battery background.

Similarly, the touchpad on the NB205 is one of the best we have used on a netbook. The 3.1 x 1.6-inch pad is the largest one we’ve seen in the 10-inch class, and it’s smooth finish makes it easy to navigate the Sony VGP-BPS13 Battery desktop. Its two dedicated right and left mouse buttons are comfortable and far from stiff.

Ports

The Toshiba mini NB205 has the standard set of ports we’ve come to expect from netbooks, but with a slight twist: two USB ports and a Kensington lock adorn the right Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery side; a VGA-out, audio in/out, Ethernet, and a third USB are mounted on the left. That third USB port is enabled with Toshiba’s Sleep-and-Charge technology, which provides power to connected devices (such as smart phones) when the system is off. A 3-in-1 memory card reader sits along the front lip.

Screen, Webcam, Audio

The NB205’s 10.1-inch, 1024 x 600-pixel resolution LED-backlit display is just the right amount of VGP-BPL9 Battery glossy. Watching a Daily Show clip on Hulu.com was bright, and colors were not at all muted. Tilting the screen back to its 45-degree maximum didn’t cause too much distracting glare, and we had no problem positioning the notebook in bed to watch a YouTube clip.

We were somewhat distracted by the almost one-inch thick bezel that surrounds the display—it seems like there’s enough room to fit an even larger screen. But, because you have to live with 10 inches, Toshiba thankfully Sony VGP-BPS9 Battery includes a zooming utility that enlarges text and icons within certain programs, including Internet Explorer and Adobe Reader, by pressing number shortcuts.

Above the display good battery is a 0.3-megapixel webcam, which provided extremely clear images in a video chat

over Skype. When we waved to our friend with whom we frequently test webcams, he had no complaints of motion blur or problems with the lighting. Toshiba also includes Inspiron 1545 battery Camera Assistant Software (which pops up when you mouse over the left side of the screen) that can record videos, snap still shots, and creates some neat effects.

Dual stereo speakers, hidden below the front edge of the system, were a bit weak compared with other netbooks we have tested. When playing The Shins over Slacker.com, we had to crank up the volume to hear the lyrics. Similarly, on a Skype call we couldn’t make out our callers’ voice as clearly Dell Vostro 1510 Battery as we would have liked. Plugging in a headset solved these problems.

Fujitsu LifeBook P8010

In the wake of the Apple MacBook Air and the Lenovo ThinkPad X300, with both Dell Latitude E4300 Battery cramming 13-inch screens into impressively thin 3-pound packages, we’re taking a harder look at traditional 12-inch ultraportables. The Fujitsu LifeBook P8010, which is priced between those two systems, lacks the sexiness of the former and the full-size keyboard and mobile broadband of the latter, but it offers good battery life and good enough performance for road warriors.

Fujitsu LifeBook P8010 Design

At just 3 pounds and 1.1 inches at its thinnest point (and 1.4 inches at its thickest), the P8010 is relatively chunky but its magnesium-alloy chassis feels wonderfully light. The design, too, Dell Latitude E6500 Battery is a pleasant upgrade from its predecessor, the LifeBook P7230. The glossy black lid looks sleek but does not pick up fingerprints easily. Underneath, you’ll find a matching piano-black bezel with a matte black keyboard and silver HP/Compaq Laptop Battery palm rests. In addition to the power button, two small speakers and four launch buttons lie above the keyboard. These launch the Fujitsu Support Center, which contains a manual, a link to the support site, and a diagnostic program; Fujitsu Power Saving Utility, which allows users to switch to power-saving mode with the touch of a button; Fujitsu Display Manager, with Dell Latitude E5500 Battery which you can adjust the resolution; and the default Web browser.

Although the LifeBook P8010’s keyboard seemed to have less flex than other Fujitsu systems Inspiron 1545 battery we’ve tested, it’s cramped, even for those with slender fingers. On the bright side, the touch buttons were quiet and tactile, and the touchpad was smooth and accurate.

Features

The P8010 also has three USB ports, FireWire, VGA, Ethernet, and modem jacks, headphone and mic ports, a combined PC Card/SD Card slot and a 1.3-megapixel webcam. The webcam showed dim images, Dell Vostro 1510 Battery even under fluorescent lights. Inconveniently, it’s placed left of center in the bezel, so to get the maximum amount of light on your face you have to position yourself off-center, too. The P8010 also has an integrated 6X DVD burner—a rarity for a notebook this small.

The 1280 x 800 display was bright but fuzzy when we watched an episode of "The Office." Viewing angles were mostly good except for when we tilted VGP-BPS9/B Battery the screen back; then again, it’s kind of a moot point when you’re watching movies on a 12.1-inch screen. The speakers were predictably weak. Even with the volume cranked all the way up in a quiet room, the sound wasn’t very loud.

Safe and Secure

The P8010 comes equipped with a fingerprint reader, enabled by Softex OmniPass, but VGP-BPS9A/B Battery enrolling our fingerprints was frustrating; after swiping seven times, we were told that OmniPass was unable to obtain a usable fingerprint image. It also requires that you enroll two fingers. Because it only responds to a specific swipe speed, we had to try many times before successfully enrolling our fingerprints. Once you get the hang of it, however, logging into the notebook using the reader is quick and easy.

In addition to the fingerprint Latitude E6400 Battery scanner, the P8010’s security features include TPM circuitry, Computrace compatibility, and a security lock slot. To protect your data, there is a shock-mounted hard drive, and Fujitsu’s Shock Sensor Utility, which parks the hard drive when it detects vibration or sudden movement. On the durability front, it also has a spill-resistant keyboard.

Performance

The P8010’s component list good battery includes a 1.2-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo LV SL7100 processor, Windows Vista Business, 2GB of RAM, and a 5,400-rpm 120GB hard drive. Both our lab and hands-on tests showed mixed results. The system notched just 987 on 3DMark03, which falls about 300 points below the average for the ultraportable category (the ASUS U6S, which costs $200 less, scored a whopping 3,073). That said, we had no troubling playing a DVD, loading several tabs in Internet Explorer, VGP-BPS13/B Battery and installing Vista updates simultaneously.

We wish the P8010 came Sony VGP-BPS13 Battery with less trialware, however; starting up took 1 minute and 27 seconds—about 30 seconds more than most Vista notebooks. After we removed the unwanted programs, the bootup time dropped to 1:09.

The P8010’s 802.11 draft-n wireless connection showed scores of 16.6 Mbps at 15 feet and 15.4 Mbps at 50 feet. We also observed Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery excellent battery life; it lasted 3 hours and 25 minutes on our DVD rundown test, which translates to about 5.5 hours of productivity.

Verdict

The Fujitsu LifeBook P8010 has almost everything a road warrior could want in an VGP-BPL9 Battery ultraportable—a sleek, lightweight design with a built-in DVD burner, long battery life, and good enough performance for business tasks. If you can live with a slightly cramped keyboard, you’ll be satisfied with this lightweight notebook.
