Design

The Envy 17 3D shares the same minimalist-chic design as the smaller Envy 14, including VGP-BPS13 a rock-solid taupe chassis made of aluminum and magnesium. A few touches, such as a paisley-esque pattern of raised bumps on the lid and VGP-BPS9 palm rest and HP's glowing logo on the lid, mark this as a premium laptop. Between the machine's durable feel and details such as quiet keys (more on that later), the Envy 17 3D feels like a luxury VGP-BPS8 laptop.

Go big or go home. That's the mantra of the HP Envy 17 3D. This large but stylish desktop replacement features an Intel VGP-BPS9A/B Core i7 processor, powerful ATI graphics, a 3D-capable, full HD display, and a Blu-ray player. Starting at $1,599 ($1,649 as configured), the 3D VGP-BPS9/B version of the notebook costs the same as a similarly equipped non-3D version we reviewed just three months ago. Sounds like a sweet deal. But VGP-BPS9/S how does this machine stack up to laptops powered by Nvidia's 3D Vision technology? And is there enough 3D content to make donning those glasses worth the trouble? Our in-depth review VGP-BPS8A reveals all.

At 7.5 pounds, the Envy 17 3D is a reasonable weight for a notebook this size, but you likely VGP-BPS2 won't carry it often (and then, you'll need the AC adapter, as you'll see in the battery section). With a maximum height of 1.5 inches, the Envy VGP-BPS2A 17 3D also feels thick, especially compared to Apple's 17-inch MacBook Pro, which is just 0.98 inches.

While the Envy 17 we reviewed in September stayed relatively cool, we noticed much warmer temperatures on the Envy VGP-BPS2B 17 3D. After playing a Hulu video at full screen for 15 minutes, the touchpad stayed a chilly 84 degrees Fahrenheit, but the space between the G and H keys VGP-BPS2C was a very warm 105 degrees, and the middle of the underside was 100 degrees.

The left side of the Envy 17 3D is the real trouble VGP-BPS13A/Q area. We can accept a fan that blows 120-degree air. But after we played Call of Duty for 10 minutes, the left Shift and Caps Lock keys were a blazing 125 degrees. That's VGP-BPS13/B disturbing.

The Envy 17 3D has a chiclet-style keyboard and number pad that stretch across the 16-inch chassis. On the Ten Thumbs Typing VGP-BPS13B/B Test, we typed at a fast rate of 94 words per minute, even with little practice on the keyboard. In addition to the keyboard's backlighting, we like VGP-BPS13B/Q that the keys have a soft finish and make little noise when you type. We also appreciate that you don't have to press the Fn key to access media VGP-BPS13A/S controls in the function row of keys.

The Envy 17 3D has a large 4.2 x 2.5-inch touchpad which doubles as a clickable button. Although we've given HP's touchpads VGP-BPS13/Q much flack in the past for being either jumpy or having too much friction, the Envy 17 3D's was easier to use. Occasionally, the cursor jumped slightly--good battery it's worse for those who use two hands--but for the most part we had little problem moving the cursor to specific spots on the screen. The VGP-BPS21A/B integrated touch buttons were always easy to press.

Display and Sound

For the non-3D version of the Envy 17, HP offers a BrightView Infinity display, which has a 1600 x 900 resolution, VGP-BPS21/S standard viewing angles, and a 60-percent color gamut. However, the 3D comes with a higher-res Ultra BrightView Infinity display, which has 1920 x VGP-BPS21 1080 full HD resolution, wide viewing angles, a 72-percent color gamut, and a refresh rate of 120Hz. The notebook also packs ATI's Eyefinity multi-display VGP-BPS21A technology, which lets users connect up to three external monitors, provided one is attached via mini DisplayPort.

The Envy 17 3D's speakers, which are tucked discreetly onto the front lip of the notebook, are powered by Beats audio VGP-BPS21B technology. When listening to music or playing games, we were impressed with the fidelity and power of the speakers. Not only were sounds crisp and dell laptop akku bright, but there was plenty of low-end bass, too. Now that 15-inch notebooks are the new family PCs, you'll want a hub that can do it all: web surfing, VGP-BPS9/B word processing, streaming movies, photo and video editing, and, yes, even gaming. The Samsung RF510 ($729 on Amazon) answers the VGP-BPS9 call for versatility by combining a Core i5 processor with discrete Nvidia graphics, stylish looks, and a responsive keyboard. But is this 5.6-pound system really good enough to play demanding games VGP-BPS10 or full HD videos?

Design

At 14.9 x 10.1 X 1.5 inches and 5.6 pounds, the RF510 is too bulky to carry around all day, but is vgp-bps8 light enough to move from the living room to the bedroom and then the kids' room in a flash. Though sized like a family PC, the Samsung RF510 has a sleek, black aesthetic that looks equally at home in the Lenovo 3000 v200 battery living room and conference room. Keyboard and Touchpad

Heat

The Samsung RF510 stayed pleasantly cool throughout our testing. Keyboard VGP-BPS13 and Touchpad

The SF510 features an island-style keyboard that's spacious and flex-free. Although Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad T410 Battery the key feel wasn't the best we've experienced, we were able to get to our normal typing speed right away. The only real VGP-BPS9/S trade-off for having a full keypad on the right side of the layout is a slightly shrunken right Shift key.

The generous 3.8 x 2.4-inch clickpad on the SF510 VGP-BPS9 took some getting used to. It's not as finicky or difficult to use as HP's clickpads from last year, but it's not as effortless to use as those found on Apple's MacBooks. The left and right mouse button require a fair amount of precision, and you'll have VGP-BPS8 to be more mindful of your finger placement to avoid clicks that don't register.

Display, Audio, Multimedia

The glossy 15.6-inch, LED-backlit display's 1366 x 768 resolution is expected in this VGP-BPS8A price range. Overall, colors were bright, blacks deep, and pixels smooth in HD content, making for an enjoyable experience when watching videos or VGP-BPS2 working in Word. We just wish we didn't have to tilt the lid back to keep the image from washing out.

Despite these drawbacks, multitouch gestures were easy to execute, and cursor control was nice and VGP-BPS2A smooth.

Thanks to SRS Premium Sound, the SF510 produces excellent audio. The speakers VGP-BPS2B at the top of the deck pumped volume enough to fill a large living room at just 50 percent. We appreciated the decent bass when listening to "Telephone" VGP-BPS2C by Lady Gaga, and the SF510 even captured the cello's resonance in tracks from Zoe Keating's "Into the Trees."



Along with the Touch and the Daily Edition, Sony has updated its smallest eReader, the Pocket Edition, with touch VGP-BPS13A/Q capabilities and an improved E Ink screen. At $179, this 5-inch device is also the least expensive eReader in Sony's stable, and it's priced to compete with the VGP-BPS13/B Amazon Kindle 3G and the Barnes & Noble Nook. But is its touchscreen enough to make up for its lack of wireless VGP-BPS13B/B connectivity?

Streaming media is in this notebook's DNA, as the SF510 includes a couple of easy ways to play or send content to other VGP-BPS13B/Q devices. The DNLA-backed Easy Content Share utility makes it simple to set up file sharing and media streaming between devices--including VGP-BPS13A/S Galaxy S phones. Intel's Wireless Display is also built in, which allows users to stream content from the notebook to an HDTV. However, you'll VGP-BPS13/Q need to buy Netgear's Push2TV adapter ($79) to enjoy this feature

Design

Sony completely redesigned the Pocket Edition to match the look of the Touch and Daily Edition. Gone is the D-pad, VGP-BPS21A/B as well as the buttons along the right side of the 5-inch display. Now there are just five slim buttons beneath the display--Page back, Page forward, Home,VGP-BPS21/S Zoom, and Options--and the Pocket now has a touchscreen just like its larger siblings.

Though light, the Pocket feels solid due to its silver metal case,VGP-BPS21 while chrome-colored buttons on the front add a touch of elegance. The included stylus fits snugly in a port along the right edge. Sony wisely replaced the miniUSB jack on the bottom with a (more standard) microUSB jack. There's also no longer VGP-BPS21A a separate power port for the A/C adapter; the Pocket comes with an adapter for the USB cord.

Ivory and brown? Yes, and it works. The $629 Samsung SF510--a Best Buy exclusive--is a VGP-BPS21B budget-friendly laptop with plenty of flair. Armed with an Intel Core i3 CPU, this 15-inch notebook is an excellent choice for consumers looking for good battery something powerful enough for everyday computing in a curvy design that is anything but ho-hum.

Design
